If Disney’s plan is to make you whistle and sing ride songs for years after you leave their parks, then they certainly succeed with Splash Mountain. So effective is this strategy that I’m still breaking out into renditions of Zip-a-Dee-Dooh-Dah in the middle of Bunnings, while my kids skip behind (Alright, sometimes without my daughter too).
Based on the film ‘Song of the South’, Splash Mountain is a visually stunning, log flume ride that takes you on an adventure through one of Uncle Remus’ Stories of Brer Rabbit. It features 103 audio-animatronics, that help tell the story as you go, along with three sizeable drops; the last being 15 metres tall.
If we are looking at Australian comparisons, Splash Mountain is very similar (theming aside) in size and ride style as Wild West Falls at Movie World.
After boarding your log shaped flume boat, the current and lift hills take you through the pre-show, setting the scene for what’s to come. You will get a look at the final drop along with what can only be described as crittery scenery. Following a medium sized drop you then enter a cave, where the first Act takes place.
Here, animatronic animals greet you with a very catchy “How Do You Do” song before you splash down again (Only this time you won’t see the drop coming) deeper into the mountain, toward “The Laughing Place.”
This is the beginning of the climax in which we see Brer Rabbit caught by Brer Bear and Brer Fox, with seemingly no hope of escape. On the final lift hill and descent, however, you join our heroine as he leaps into the thorn riddled briar patch and you get soaked!
Then comes the big Finale; a welcome home party for Brer Rabbit and yourselves, with a chorus of animals, on a show boat, singing Zip-a-Dee-Dooh-Dah. What a treat! If you’re lucky, you might also be able to catch a glimpse of the Disney Train passing through.
Below are some video highlights from this Disney Parks classic.
Splash Mountain is a fantastic ride for the whole family. It has enough sizeable drops to keep the thrill seekers happy, while the kids are sure to love the singing and dancing animals. Just know that you will definitely get wet regardless of where you are seated. It is a must do in anyone’s book!
